Kayak fishing is one of the most restful and rewarding hobbies there is. Fishing in general ticks all these boxes in fact, so it only gets better once you add a boat and float out into the center of a still and peaceful lake… or battle your way through some rapids!
The Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 Angler Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayak is one of the best fishing kayaks for people who love kayak fishing and who want to commit to the hobby. It’s a top of the range kayak and in fact, we named it ‘best of the best’ in our guide to the best fishing kayaks for 2018.
Let’s take a closer look at this kayak then and see just what makes it such a catch (pun intended) and whether it is right for you.
To look at, this kayak appears like a serious piece of kit. It’s available in either brown or ‘urban’ (black and white) camo and both make for a something that is striking while also very practical.
The design is also very long and narrow, which makes it perfect for cutting through the water at a great speed. The dimensions specifically come in at 13.4” x 28” x 20”. It weighs 62lbs and it has a maximum capacity of 400-450lbs.
The weight of this boat isn’t too heavy to carry around for one person. It’s not something you can easily sling in the boot and carry for miles – but if you’re taking this down a gravel path from a roof rack to the water, then it will sit easily enough on a shoulder without giving you too much pause for thought.
What’s also very important when considering the build of a kayak though is the comfort. Fortunately, this boat won’t let you down in that regard either, with some of the most enjoyable seats to sit in of any boat that I’ve experienced.
These are ‘Comfort Plus’ seats and while the name is a bit of your usual company nonsense, the result is pretty great to park your rear in!
This kayak comes with a number of great features that you’re going to get plenty of use out of. They include for instance, a rod holder for keeping your rod in place (no need to mount one yourself), a 6” storage hatch that is perfect for keeping a host of items, 2 cup holders, 2 paddle keeps, and a skid plate. It is also transducer compatible. There’s also an oversized tank at the rear which is designed to store a host of larger items. You’ll be able to keep coolers here, crates, tackle boxes, and even SCUBA tanks!
All that storage is a really great feature. It means that you can use this as a highly versatile kayak and enjoy everything from a spot of fishing to a day of free diving! Then there’s the cup holder and space for a cooler, which makes this perfect for an ideal, relaxing, day out with a picnic.
No boat is perfect though and there are a couple of downsides here which you should keep in mind. One is that the hatch is somewhat moist. Water gets in here all too easily, meaning that whatever you store better be water resistant!
It’s also a great having all of the fishing-friendly features though too. The rod holders are always a must for the best fishing kayaks. Of course, the precise placement though is always going to be something of a matter of taste: you may find yourself wishing that they were moved just a little upward or to the side.
The paddle holders also work well and the kayak is very comfortable to ride around. Carry handles are another nice touch, which makes the thing a little easier to get from point A to B.
You’ll find that this sturdy and rigid design is one that you can put your faith in when you’re out on the water. Even in choppy conditions, you’ll have no problem building up to a reasonable speed (25-30mph no problem) and cutting through waves and ripples.
Although this is a SOK, you’ll still find that this is very tricky to topple over. Then again, it’s always a good idea when getting any new kayak to try and find the ‘tipping point’. Do this on a sunny day in rough clothes and that way you will know how far you can push it.
As mentioned, there is the occasional tendency for water to make it into the holding areas. Unfortunately, that also goes for you: and you may find that water gets around your seat. This can be frustrating for some, but ultimately most of us accept that we are going to get a little wet when we go kayaking. And it’s certainly not excessive.
- Sturdy design
- LOTS of storage
- Fishing centric features and design
- Easy to carry
- Very fast
- Suitable for inshore and offshore
- Storage can get wet
- You can get a little wet
- Not stable enough for standing
This is actually one of the oldest fishing kayak designs and there’s a reason that it hasn’t changed in all that time. Like the shark which just hasn’t seen a need to evolve in millennia; this boat has likewise reached the top of the food chain.
It’s comfortable to relax in for long stretches, it has lots of useful features and it’s generally very well made.

Ocean Kayak ProwlerIn conclusion then, this is a sturdy and well-made kayak and it’s easy to see why it’s widely regarded as one of the best fishing kayaks available right now. This is an excellent inshore and offshore fishing machine that tracks well, that is very quick and that you can rely on. If you’re a beginner looking for a SOK that won’t topple right over (even for those larger users) then this will do the job. At the same time though, if you’re more of a kayaking pro looking for something you can take out onto the ocean, then it’s game as well.
